The African Union this week promptly rejected formation of a parallel government by Sudan’s paramilitary group, Rapid Support Forces (RSF). But that was only one of the hurdles facing the group that is competing for power and influence with the military government under Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
After deliberations on July 29, the AU Peace and Security Council, the 15-member body that checks stability of the continent, said it was calling on AU members and partners to “reject the fragmentation of Sudan and not recognise the so-called parallel government, which has serious consequences on the peace efforts and the existential future of the country.”
