One person was shot dead in a protest against Kenya's election body in the western city of Kisumu, as supporters of opposition Cord coalition Monday also took to the streets in the capital Nairobi.

Five others are fighting for their lives at Kisumu County Hospital with gunshot wounds.

A senior administrator at the hospital said the deceased had a gunshot wound in the chest.

Businesses were closed as police battled with the protesting youths, who had blocked key roads including the Kisumu-Kakamega highway.

Similar incidents were witnessed in Migori County, where youths blocked all major roads in Migori Town and lit bonfires in protests against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Supermarkets and schools remained closed ahead of the protests.

The protesters were defying an order by the police declaring the demos illegal.

Kisumu has seen some of the worst violence in the almost weekly protests as three people died with several others injured on May 23.
