Kenya’s judiciary has denied reports that its request for extra security for the Supreme Court judges had been turned down.

Chief Justice David Maraga, in a statement released on Twitter on Wednesday, said the report by Reuters news agency was "untrue".

"The Inspector of General Police has in fact enhanced security of the Supreme Court judges,” CJ Maraga said.

On Tuesday, Reuters reported that the government rejected a plea by the judiciary to beef up the security for the Supreme Court judges after one of their bodyguards was shot.

According to a senior judicial officer, quoted by Reuters, some of the apex court judges consequently failed to turn up to hear a petition that could have delayed last week’s presidential election.

The source had said the shooting was seen as an attempt to intimidate the judges.
