Five people have been killed and several others injured after a vehicle they were travelling in was ambushed in South Sudan.

The Ugandan registered vehicle was attacked by unknown gunmen between Moli and Keripii, 55km from the Nimule border post.

The attackers took off with the passengers' valuables.

The incident is reported to have occurred at 10am on Wednesday.

The travellers were headed to Uganda from the capital Juba.

A Ugandan army official said the Juba-Nimule route was yet to be safe.

“We appeal to civilians to be careful while doing their business there,” Lt Hassan Kato said.

In June, five Ugandans, who were among 15 passengers, were shot dead in an ambush by unknown gunmen on a civilian convoy on Nimule-Juba Highway.

About 35 passengers sustained severe injuries in the ambush at Moli village, about 140 kilometres from Juba.
