Somalia’s new federal member state declared on July 30 is raising both hope for marginalised communities, and political tensions for neighbouring administrative regions.

Known as Northeast State, it was created at the end of a weeklong delegates conference in Las Anod, the capital of the Sool region. The new state becomes Somalia’s sixth federal state, joining Jubbaland, Southwest, Hirshabelle, Galmudug and Puntland.
