Some 1.7 million kilogrammes of tea destined for Sudan remain stranded in warehouses in Mombasa, more than a year after Sudan suspended imports of Kenyan tea.

Kenya’s tea sector continues to register losses from the closure of the Sudan market, the continued blockade of the Iranian market and the introduction of a value-based tea levy, with traders warning that the combined impact is hurting farmers, exporters and the country’s competitiveness at the Mombasa Tea Auction.
