The United States is concerned over the possibility of the Ethiopian conflict spilling over into neighbouring countries, even as it faces a dilemma over how to apportion blame between Addis Ababa and Asmara.

As Ethiopian forces announced on Sunday that they had retaken Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region, from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), Washington spoke of the wider dispute between Eritrea and Ethiopia.
