US President Donald Trump’s first 100 days have been characterised by raising tariffs, disengagement from multilateral institutions, climate change denialism, mass deportations without due process, cutting down America's diplomatic footprint on the African continent, and backing away on institutions promoting America’s core values on human rights and democracy.
The evolution of these policy priorities Trump campaigned on have put American foreign policy on a neo-isolationist platform. This has led to fears of further marginalisation of Africa as the Trump administration shifts from decades-old strategic alliances on the continent, to ad hoc transactionalism and quid pro quo deals on a bilateral basis with many countries in Africa.
