Rising tensions in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region are erecting fresh hurdles to the country’s recovery from the devastating war that ended in 2022, as a violent confrontation between the federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) revives fears of renewed conflict.

The military build-up is also complicating efforts to rebuild institutions, restore basic services and stabilise communities still scarred by the 2020-2022 conflict.
