The district councillors elected during Burundi's June 5 elections went to the polls on Wednesday to choose 10 senators -- two from each of the country's five provinces.

According to the Constitution, each province is entitled to one senator from the Hutu ethnic group and one from the Tutsi ethnic group. In addition, three senators will be co-opted, bringing the total number of senators to 13 for the next five-year term.
