200 seized as mayhem continues in Lusaka

Tuesday April 19 2016

More than 200 people have been arrested in the Zambian capital Lusaka over protests against suspected ritual killings, a local radio reported.

Rowdy mobs Tuesday continued with street protests, looting shops owned by both Zambians and foreign nationals, located in the highly populated parts of the city.

The riots began Monday over reports of several ritual killings in Lusaka slums.

The media said 11 more people were arrested to help with investigations of the murders, whose victims' genitals and ears were cut off and hearts prised out.

Reports identified a supermarket belonging to a Burundian national, Mr Anthony Mugushi, who has lived in Zambia for 12 years, as one of those targeted by looters. On Monday, four shops belonging to Rwandans were also looted.

Fears were rife the mayhem was degenerating into a xenophobia, with calls to the police to act fast and more decisively to restore order.
