Kenya's former President Daniel arap Moi was on Wednesday afternoon admitted at the Nairobi Hospital for a routine check-up.

His physician, Dr David Silverstein, said Mr Moi would spend a few nights in the hospital for the doctors to have enough time to examine him.

Mr Moi's admission was announced by his office in a short statement.

Family members

The former president turned 94 in September, a ceremony which he celebrated in a private function at his Kabarak home, west of Nairobi.

A statement by his press secretary Lee Njiru said he was with immediate family members.

Late in March, the retired head of state was discharged from Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, Israel, where he had gone for check-ups.

“Mzee has been released after doctors gave him a clean bill of health after check-ups on his knee, which had been causing him discomfort,” read a statement from his office.

A minor surgery

Mr Moi's office had dismissed claims on social media about his health.

The problem with his knee began on July 30, 2006 after he was involved in a road accident.

On January 27, 2017 the former president underwent a minor surgery on his knee at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi.
