Surging power demand as a result of technology and mounting geopolitical tensions have made 2050 net zero goals unattainable, with the world now barrelling towards 2.6°C of global warming, energy industry research firm Wood Mackenzie warned on Thursday.

The projection is a setback on the attainment of the Paris climate goals and an indictment on leading energy and oil companies, which set greenhouse gas emission reduction targets by 2030, only to renege on those commitments in the recent boom of Artificial Intelligence and geopolitical tensions putting a strain on energy systems.
