In the waters off the Somalia coast, piracy incidents have been rising, with officials unable to pinpoint who dropped the ball after a decade of near-success.

It started in November 2024, when two vessels were hijacked. In 2025, five more ships were taken over by pirates. This year, the number has gone up to six. It points to a habit where pirates have used hijacked fishing boats or dhows as mother ships with which they have launched attacks on cargo ships and tankers, now taking advantage of diverted attention to the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.
