Court, tax evasion cases halt Kampala Coach

Friday October 24 2014

Businesses and passengers travelling the Kigali-Nairobi, Kenya route through Kampala, Uganda, using Kampala Coach are bracing for losses as the company suffers from family disputes and tax evasion allegations, which have affected its Kigali operations.

The firm’s travel schedules are experiencing disruptions due to fears of travelling through Kampala incase their buses are impounded by Uganda Revenue Authority due to alleged tax arrears.

Kampala coach is the only bus company that goes directly to Nairobi.

The firm’s Kenyan shareholders are embroiled in court battles with the High Court after it appointed a liquidator for the transport company. Although the Kampala Coach office in Kigali denies any disruption to the operations, last week passengers saw their travel schedule from Kigali to Kampala halted.

It is understood that the Uganda Revenue Authority in September last year impounded the firm’s buses and threatened to auction them over the non-payment of Rwf697 billion in taxes.

“We have no problems at all in our Kigali operations at the moment and most of our problems have been resolved,” said Aimable Desire, Kigali Coach station manager.

Kampala Coach faces a possible closure of its Rwandan routes almost a year after Akamba coach also closed business in Rwanda due to heavy losses.

Passengers going to Kenya will have to contend with boarding two buses.
