The unnamed patient travelled overland from Beni in the Democratic Republic of Congo to Kampala, apparently breaching several layers of protection along the way. Despite the Uganda-DRC border being officially closed, he entered Uganda and travelled more than 400 kilometres inland before flying from Entebbe to Nairobi. He was screened at both airports and completed health declarations, apparently without triggering concern, before leaving Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. His journey exposes an uncomfortable reality about African borders. They can be closed on paper while remaining porous in practice. In numerous border communities, official boundaries cut across families, trading networks and communities that have existed for generations. People continue to move through informal routes, regardless of what governments declare at formal crossing points.
