After closely following Afrigo Band since its founding during my childhood in 1975, last year I initiated and led a project documenting its phenomenal journey of half a century, which was published on the band’s Golden Jubilee. So when Afrigo’s founder and hitherto uninterrupted leader Moses Matovu died suddenly last week, my mind was still saturated with data collected from deep diving into the band’s internal history, its near-misses, its reinventions, and above all, the singular discipline of the man who held it together.
Understandably, when many Ugandans wonder loudly how Afrigo may survive after its Moses, my mind goes to another entity that I love, not by choice but by descent, by birth and by law, called Uganda, which I have also keenly observed for 50 years, starting 1975 when coincidentally, Afrigo was born.
