I would like to begin with a quote from the Animal Farm by the prophet George Orwell: “Man is the only creature that consumes without producing.”
All Africans in the postcolonial age are born knowing you have to hustle to get what you want. Not just in the “go to school, work hard, success will ensure” kind of way but in the more abstract and menacing “this modernity was not built with you in mind. Do your best to succeed in it anyways.”
