The Russian Orthodox Church is rapidly expanding across Africa, building congregations, training local priests and embedding itself in communities, even as diplomats and analysts warn that its growing network could give Moscow another channel for political and ideological influence on the continent.

The expansion has taken on a new dimension amid Russia’s war in Ukraine, with experts and diplomats questioning whether the church’s growing network is purely religious or is also serving Moscow’s wider diplomatic and strategic interests.
