The worsening security crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has prompted urgent deliberations at the highest level, with President Félix Tshisekedi holding a closed-door meeting on Thursday to assess the situation.

Thursday’s closed-door meeting in Kinshasa brought together senior government officials, including the Chief of Staff of the Congolese army, to assess developments in the country’s eastern regions following a fresh outbreak of violence. Government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya said President Félix Tshisekedi convened the session to discuss options for restoring control and ensuring the safety of the population. Muyaya added that a formal meeting of the High Defence Council would be convened shortly to further address the situation.
