The conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo may never be solved through military solutions, leaders from the region now say. But even in doing so, there has been a feeling of regret on whether the momentum for peace was actually lost in abrupt change of the very military missions.
This week, a joint summit of the East African Community (EAC), and the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), agreed that peace in the Congo will come through dialogue. They turned to a high-profile panel of facilitators, including former presidents Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya and Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria for the tough task. It also included former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe, former Central African Republic leader Catherine Samba-Panza and Ethiopia’s ex-president Sahle-Work Zewde.
