Ethiopia tightens grip on press to dodge accountability – HRW

Ethiopia’s initial media freedoms under Abiy Ahmed have eroded into crackdowns and arrests, fuelling fears for press independence.

When Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took office in 2018, he promised a new era of openness and reform. Exiled journalists returned, political prisoners were released, and in 2019 Ethiopia hosted World Press Freedom Day.

Seven years later, that optimism has faded. On September 22, Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported that the government has intensified its crackdown on independent journalism through arrests and harassment.
