EAC and SADC endorse merger of Congo peace processes
Congolese people carry their belongings as they flee from their villages around Sake in Masisi territory, following clashes between M23 rebels and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) on February 7, 2024.
Leaders from two blocs in East and Southern Africa have endorsed a proposal to merge their peace processes in the Congo with the African Union, effectively placing the continental body in the lead.
The heads of state and government of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) agreed to the proposals first tabled by their chairs, seeing efficiency as a useful tool towards long-term solution in the troubled eastern part of Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
