The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) has dismissed objections by Rwanda in a high-profile case filed by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), marking a significant development in the ongoing conflict in eastern Congo.

In its ruling on June 26, 2025, the 11-judge bench, led by the court’s president Justice Modibo Sacko, rejected Kigali’s submissions that the continental court had no jurisdiction to hear the case, in which DRC accuses Rwanda of committing serious and systematic human rights violations on Congolese territory, in connection with the armed conflict in the eastern provinces of the country.
