At one point in his life, Alibhai Mullah Jeevanjee is said to have owned 70 percent of Nairobi, but the number of people I have asked knew little or nothing about him. ‘Was he something to do with the Jeevanjee Gardens in the CBD?’ someone asked. He certainly was. Mind you, we are talking about a long time ago.

Jeevanjee had the gardens constructed back in 1904 and, two years later, he donated them to the people of Nairobi. They took up to five acres, and as many of you will know, they are bordered by Muindi Mbingu, Mokhtar Dadda, Munrovia Streets and Moi Avenue.
