Kenya’s inability to pacify the north worsens insecurity

In my days as a land use planner and later a journalist, I made two visits to northern Kenya through which I came to appreciate just how multifaceted and complicated the insecurity situation facing many parts of the country is.
As a young planner, I made the first journey in early 1994 in a Land Rover to Alinjugur area, one of the remotest parts of today’s Garissa County, 104 kilometres from Garissa town. This was long before terrorism had become part of Kenya’s insecurity nightmare.
