Binyavanga Wainaina and his memoir. His recently released memoir captures the cool middle class efficiency that is finding its way into the modern Kenyan social fabric of tweets and pings. Photo/File
Binyavanga Wainaina is my friend. He is also roughly in my age group, and a peer of sorts. I am chummy with the Kwani? crowd, meaning I know their bad table manners. Which places me in a good position to deliver a padded jab following the recent, colourful launch of Binyavanga’s highly acclaimed memoir, One Day I Will Write About This Place.
As we celebrate with him and envy his exalted position — very few of us can even begin to dream of sitting on Oprah Winfrey’s couch — still, someone must do the honourable thing.
