The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has signed a deal with KoBold Metals, an American miner backed by billionaires Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, for large-scale mineral exploration in the country.

The agreement announced in Kinshasa on Friday—signed by Congolese Minister of Mines Kizito Pakabomba and KoBold DRC Managing Director Benjamin Katabuka, and witnessed by President Félix Tshisekedi and United States Ambassador to the DRC Lucy Tamlyn—spells out a strategic partnership that paves the way for further American investments in Congo’s mining sector.
