Tanzania tops East African Community (EAC) member states in utilising quiet protectionism and non-tariff barriers, which create friction for regional traders and fuel disputes despite bilateral commitments to ease cross-border commerce in the region, the Regional Monitoring Committee has revealed.

The trade restrictions imposed by Dodoma have triggered a sharp decline in domestic exports from Kenya and Uganda, squeezing cross-border traders even as pressure mounts from regional leaders for free trade.
