Uganda and Tanzania are moving to expand their oil ambitions with a proposed $20 billion regional energy hub in Tanga, even as civil society groups warn that the project could compound environmental and livelihood risks already linked to the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).

More than 20 civil society organisations are challenging the proposed Tanga Regional Energy Hub, warning that the planned hub risks adding pressure on mangroves, fisheries, marine-protected areas and coral reefs around Tanga as oil storage, refining, pipelines, marine logistics and tanker traffic expand.
