Kenya's dominance as East Africa's aviation gateway is under threat as delays in upgrading Jomo Kenyatta International Airport coincide with a regional airport-building race that is rapidly expanding passenger and transit capacity in Ethiopia, Rwanda and Tanzania.
The Kenya Airports Authority says JKIA is operating beyond its intended capacity and risks losing market share to new mega airports such as Ethiopia's Bishoftu Airport and Rwanda's Bugesera International Airport unless expansion plans are fast-tracked.
