In early February, the phones of more than 300 fish farmers on Dunga Beach, Kisumu County, buzzed almost simultaneously. The message was brief but alarming. Dissolved oxygen levels beneath the surface of Lake Victoria had dropped below safe levels. Farmers were advised to reduce feeding immediately and move their floating cages into safer areas.
Members of the Dunga Beach Management Unit (BMU) mobilised in hours. Working through phone calls and WhatsApp groups, they towed more than 450 cages stocked with tilapia into deeper, better-oxygenated waters.
