Succession jitters send Uganda’s elite house-hunting in neighbouring Nairobi

A Ugandan who spent some days in Nairobi recently took an Uber ride. The driver was a Ugandan who had recently arrived in Kenya. Some days later, he was in another Uber, and when the Kenyan driver found out he was a Ugandan, he asked: “What is happening in Uganda? Many of my friends there are asking me to get them work or a place to stay. Why are people running away?”

The movement out of Uganda has been drip-drip, but it seems to be turning into a full-on exodus, as worries grow about 82-year-old President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power for over 40 years. Murmurs about his loosening grip on power and reality, a wobbly economy, and fears that a potentially murderous dictatorship could succeed him do little to inspire confidence.
