A demonstrator along Harambee Avenue in Nairobi on June 12, 2025, during protests over the death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang at Central Police Station.
At first, I was conflicted about two respected and courageous human rights defenders — Irungu Houghton and Faith Odhiambo — agreeing to participate in a panel of experts appointed by President William Ruto to establish a framework for reparations and compensation of victims of ‘demonstrations, public protests and riots’.
On the one hand, I thought inclusion of the duo would protect the integrity of the process. Quite often, these bodies become another way to fleece the public.
