World Court dismisses genocide suit against UAE over Sudan war
Delegates attend a hearing at the International Court of Justice for a case brought by Sudan to the World Court demanding emergency measures against the UAE and accusing the Gulf state of violating obligations under the Genocide Convention by arming paramilitary forces, in The Hague, Netherlands on April 10, 2025.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has dismissed Sudan’s lawsuit against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in which it accused Abu Dhabi of complicity in the genocide carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Darfur.
The court’s decision, issued on May 5, 2025, is based on procedural grounds, specifically a lack of jurisdiction. The ICJ ruled that it could not hear the case due to a reservation the UAE had made upon signing the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. This reservation relates to Article IX of the Convention, which grants the court jurisdiction over disputes between state parties.
