Zanzibar has tightened guidelines for tourism activities during the Holy Month of Ramadan, which begins early next week, urging visitors to respect local Islamic customs to avoid clashes with law enforcement.

In a February 11 notice, the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism (ZCT) directed restaurants, bars and food outlets outside hotel compounds to close during daylight hours across the archipelago. They may reopen after sunset for iftar, the meal that breaks the fast.
