Tshisekedi’s rivals besieged as US sanctions Kabila
Former Democratic Republic of the Congo president Joseph Kabila arrives for a photo session after meeting a delegation of women and university leaders seeking a “solution” to the crisis in the eastern regions in Goma, North Kivu on May 31, 2025.
The US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on Thursday imposed sanctions on former president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Joseph Kabange Kabila, citing his role in supporting the March 23 Movement (M23) and the Congo River Alliance (Alliance Fleuve Congo, AFC).
The decision could add to DRC President Felix Tshisekedi’s recent political gains, after aligning more closely with Washington and its Western allies while pushing for tougher action against those he says are destabilising his authority.
