Just a week ago, on January 12, Tanzanian rights activist Maria Sarungi was abducted in Nairobi, sparking fresh concerns about freedom of expression in her home country as it enters another electioneering season.
In an interview with The EastAfrican, Ms Sarungi traced her steady metamorphosis from a communications student at ELTE University in Hungary to a media figure and social media influencer in Tanzania, which led to her being targeted by state operatives and eventual flee to Kenya in 2020.
