Tanzania brushes up image as human rights pressure mounts

Tanzania this week went into full defensive mode against allegations of pre-election human rights violations, with vehement denial at the United Nations (UN) and through its police force on the domestic front.

Tanzania’s Permanent Representative to the UN Dr Abdallah Possi told a UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva on Thursday that references to the effect that the country’s civic space was being ruthlessly curtailed ahead of the general election later this year, had no basis whatsoever.
