Scientists have developed 30 new varieties of drought tolerant beans that could help maintain future production of the crop in Africa.

Many of the new varieties, referred to as heat-beater beans, are crossbreeds of common beans, namely pinto, white, black and kidney beans and the tepary bean, a hardy survivor cultivated since pre-Columbian times in an area that is now part of northern Mexico and the American southwest.
