Laurent Mbanda, Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Rwanda, is spearheading what many are calling a spiritual coup—ushering in a new shift in global Anglican leadership from Canterbury to the Global South.

This move follows Canterbury’s appointment of Sarah Mullally as the first female Archbishop—a decision denounced by Global Anglican Future Conference (Gafcon) as a departure from biblical leadership.
