Uganda under scrutiny as activists, journalists face post-election crackdown
Suspected Uganda opposition members were charged in Kampala court on January 19, 2026, on allegations of public nuisance, inciting violence and obstructing police officers in the aftermath of the January 15 election.
International and regional rights organisations have raised alarm over Uganda’s post-election environment, citing widespread intimidation of activists, opposition supporters and journalists by State security agencies.
President Yoweri Museveni retained power, entering a seventh term, following elections last week in which the Electoral Commission said he won 7.9 million votes against his main challenger, Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, who secured 2.7 million.
