At an emergency UN Security Council meeting in New York on Monday, members roundly condemned Israel for its December 26 announcement that it was recognising Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland as a sovereign state.
Fourteen of the 15 Council members denounced the move, with only the US defending Israel’s “diplomatic right” to make the decision but stopping short of following suit.
