South Sudan’s transitional coalition government led by President Salva Kiir may be entering another era of uncertainty after key officials in a rival group were placed on criminal charges including treason.
On Thursday, the Justice Ministry placed several officials including First Vice-President Riek Machar and other lieutenants of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in Opposition (SPLM-IO) on a charge sheet of crimes ranging from murder, treason, conspiracy and terrorism.
