Lull before the storm? A long June for Ruto after fuel protests
Kenyan protesters participate in a demonstration marking the first anniversary of the 2024 anti-government protests, which drew widespread condemnation over the use of force by security agencies, in Nairobi, Kenya, on June 25, 2025.
Kenyan public transport operators called off a nationwide strike that shut down the economy in parts of the country early last week, handing President William Ruto’s government a reprieve after days of rising social tensions.
The President announced at a press briefing in Mombasa on Friday that the strike had ended after meeting representatives of transport sector associations, which had withdrawn their vehicles from the roads on Monday and Tuesday to protest high pump prices linked to the US-Israel war on Iran.
