Tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have spilled onto one of African club football’s biggest stages. It came after Rwanda’s military-backed side, APR FC, threatened to boycott a Confederation of African Football fixture against Les Aigles du Congo over health and security concerns.
APR wants the match moved to neutral territory, preferably Tanzania, citing the World Health Organization’s declaration of a Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC and the continuing conflict in the region. Ebola has killed more than 2,000 people in eastern Congo where more than 4,000 cases have been confirmed.
