Somalia’s Puntland state has long relied on foreign support to contain the rising threat of ISIS extremism. It is now discovered that foreigners also form part of ISIS’s fighting force, drawn by rugged mountains, cave networks and opportunities to extort locals.
Last Saturday, the Puntland state government published a list of names and photographs of foreigners it said had been captured. The 50 men were seized during a year-long military operation in the Calmiskat area of the Golis Mountains in north-eastern Somalia.
