Violent demonstrations erupted in Tanzania’s major cities, Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Dodoma on Wednesday and Thursday in response to the fallout from the general election, conjuring up memories of the Zanzibar riots that followed the 2000 polls, which left at least 35 people dead, according to human rights reports.
The chaos began in the morning and escalated when the police announced a curfew in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday. Demonstrators stormed polling stations, scattering and destroying them and creating scenes of widespread disorder.
