The war in Sudan has pushed millions of people into hunger, destroyed livelihoods and disrupted food production. A new climate threat is now adding pressure to communities that are already struggling to survive.

According to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (Igad), nearly 19.5 million people — around 41 per cent of the population — experienced severe food insecurity between February and May. This included around five million people in Emergency and approximately 134,800 people in Catastrophe, which is the most severe level of hunger.
