As news of the death of opposition leader Raila Odinga spread on Wednesday, African leaders sent messages of condolence to the government and people of Kenya, eulogising the departed former prime minister as a pan-African statesman who championed democracy on the continent.

East African leaders were quick to send their tributes, but, curiously, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) President Félix Tshisekedi – widely regarded as Odinga’s friend – did not immediately issue his condolences, nor did his government.
